We’re more than aware of the risks when spending too much time in the sun & the Sun Awareness Week in May was aimed to warn pet owners of the risks to their furry friends as well.

Sun & heat related conditions in animals has risen by 20% since 2014, ranging from dehydration, sunburn to more serious conditions such as melanoma. Such risks can cost anywhere between £528 to over £2,000 in vet bills, with animals suffering from heatstroke & skin cancer alike.

Fur is not a great protector, especially if your animal is light coloured, as the natural pigmentation to protect against UV rays is lacking.

Top safe sun tips for animals

  1. Limit time spent in the sun, especially during midday.
  2. On light/thin fur, nose, ears or other exposed areas, use a special pet sun cream.
  3. Provide plenty of cool, clean water.
  4. Clip pets with long-hair to prevent them from overheating.
  5. Never leave an animal in a locked car, even if only for a few minutes.
  6. Try not to walk dogs between 8am and 5pm on hot days, as these are the hottest periods.
  7. Contact a vet immediately if you see any ulcers, sores or sudden discolouration of the skin.
