With over 4 million dogs considered overweight, canine obesity is an ever growing problem in Britain. If your beloved pooch packed on the pounds over winter & is still struggling to loose them, try these 8 tips to help them shed that excess weight.

1. Re-evaluate Calorie & Diet Intake

Periodically check with your vet that you’re still feeding your pet the right food & never take your pet off of a vet prescribed food without checking first. Your other option is to reduce your dog’s calorie intake by feeding them smaller portions several times a day.

2. Check Water

Dogs will often eat wet food instead of drinking water, which is what they really need. Providing plenty of water during winter should help this.

3. Use Less Treats

Winter months may leave you with a grumpy looking pet & perking them up with a treat is all too tempting. Check with your vet on brands and quantity to use whilst your dog is losing weight & try a selection if the first lot isn’t to their liking. Choose a reduced amount of healthier treats & vegetables too.

4. Walking

Some dogs sleep a lot more during the colder months, so start them off by taking short walks & slowly increase the distance every day. Senior pets or with joint problems, get your vets advice on how to exercise the dog.

5. Ball Games

Dogs also love to chase tennis balls, even Frisbee’s, so if you have a big enough garden you can give them a good old run about.

6. Play dates

Majority of dogs love canine & human company so getting them together to play is always a good thing, not just to encourage positive socialisation but also playful exercise.

7. Swimming

It’s not the most fun to clean up a wet dog, but if they are able to jump in some water, let them. Dogs are natural swimmers, and most love the water.

8. Habit Forming Changes

Stick to a feeding and exercise routine with your pet & try to encourage your dog to enjoy all exercise and any new things. Enthusiasm is the key to prevent you both feeling like it’s a chore.
