Dangerous dogs have caused a lot of damage to pet owners beloved pooches, so here is a brief guide to help should you ever be faced with such a situation.

  • Understanding why dogs attack – It may be down to a need to dominate or of feeling afraid and stressed, as a result of abuse, neglect & carelessness in controlling the animal
  • When might a dog attack – When out, watch how your pet is interacting with others & if there are any signs of aggression. Main signs a dog gives before attacking is snarling, growling, barking, baring teeth & barking.
  • Avoiding an attack – Be vigilant, especially when the dog is off the lead. Ensure your dog is well trained & able to understand basic commands. Also try to steer clear of strange dogs territory, as they may not like it being invaded.
  • Don’t get bitten – If you have to deal with a vicious dog, make sure you stay calm, do not kick or or yell as it may aggravate the dog further. Keep fingers curled up in your palm, if the dog does bite, try not to pull away as the wound could get worse. Where possible, try & put a barrier between yourself & the dog.
  • Your dog gets attacked – As with yourself, try & get a barrier between your dog & the attacking one or try distracting it with a stick, never ever try to hit the dog. Don’t pick up your dog either as this may make the attacking dog go for you as well. Get immediate medical attention for your dog & be aware they may also bite if they are in pain. Try & take note of the dog that attacked, size, colour, breed & report the attack as soon as possible.
  • What else can i do – Make sure you report any attacks to the police on 101. If you think a dog is dangerous, report it to your local council.
  • Any more tips – Beware of a dog that is eating, don’t tease or approach a dog without it’s owner, check if a dog is ok to be stroked by its owner & always move calmly around a dog.
